5 Things You Need To Be Praying About With Your Spouse

There are many things in a marriage that you need to be praying about with your spouse, after all, the key to a successful Christian marriage is prayer!

In Philippians, it says:

“…but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Philippians 4:6b Niv

A strong reminder that we can bring anything we may face in our lives, or in our marriage, before God in prayer.

What Do I Need To Pray About With My Spouse

As stated above, there is nothing too big or too small to pray about. However, if you are new to praying, in a new marriage, or just haven’t spent a lot of time praying one on one with your spouse, this list is a good place to start!

1. Pray To Grow Closer to Christ

It’s easy to remember to pray for a sick aunt or a hurting friend, but praying to grow closer to Christ is something that is easily overlooked.

Praying for your spouse and yourself to draw closer to God is important.

A marriage that is deeply rooted in Christ is one that is harder to break apart. Keeping your relationship with Christ strong helps to keep your marriage strong! Click To Tweet

2. Pray Against Temptation

A family friend of ours travels often for his work. He once told my husband and me, that before every trip he and his wife pray together. They pray for safe travels, but also against temptation in their marriage while they are apart.

What better way to guard your marriage against temptation is there than to pray about it with your spouse?

It seems that at every turn there is something just waiting to tempt us to sin against our spouses. Praying against these temptations is one big way to protect yourselves and your marriage from sin.

3. Pray For Your Family

Praying for your family is one of the most important things you need to be praying about with your spouse.

If you have children, it’s a good idea to begin praying for them as soon as they are born, or even before they are born! Praying for their walk with God, and the choices that they face is essential. By praying together you can help each other focus on specific areas where each of your children may need prayer.

You may not have kids, but that doesn’t mean you should skip this topic. Praying for your family is by no means limited to praying for children.

It’s equally important to pray for any of your family members, and the needs they may have. Loved ones who are struggling with their faith or have health concerns definitely need your prayers!

4. Pray About Your Finances

Money, more specifically, the way money is spent, is a common issue in many marriages.

For some, praying about finances might be praying that your spending is in order. Others might be praying for stability or even a better job. No matter what your financial concerns are, praying about them with your spouse is a good idea.

Bringing financial issues before God, together, can help you to better understand the concerns your partner might have about your finances.

5. Pray for Health

It’s good to pray for your health with your spouse, but not just physical health, your mental health as well.

Obviously, if you or your spouse has health problems, or is facing a trial with their physical well-being, this is something you will want to bring before God. Praying for healing and good health is important.

However, don’t forget that praying for both of you to be healthy mentally is equally important.

It’s easy to feel worn out or mentally weighed down by things in our lives. Praying about these issues can help to ease some of the stress you or your spouse might be feeling, and by praying together, you are showing your partner your support and care for them.

Final Thoughts

Prayer is such an important, yet often neglected part of a marriage.

There are so many things in life that you need to pray about with your spouse. This list is just the start.

Be sure to spend time praying together daily to strengthen your relationship with God, and your spouse!

Thanks for sharing! Sadly we don’t pray together too often outside of the dinner table, but I know we pray for each other individually. This reminds me of the importance of doing it together more often.

Same here, we do more of our praying as a family than as a couple. It’s something I’m really working on, which is partly why I wrote it, because I figured maybe other couples needed a little nudge too!

I hear ya! My husband didn’t grow up praying, and it’s been a long road getting him to feel comfortable praying in front of my kids and I. It’s definitely something we are working on!

Very good tips and important topic. My husband and I don’t really travel separately, but it is still good to pray against temptation. The enemy always wants to come against marriages.

Donna Miller · August 8, 2020 at 5:12 pm

Prayer is so incredibly important in marriage. We forget sometimes that our Christian marriages are a three fold cord, we should be taking with God as much as we try to talk to our hubbies. Thank you for this post with guidance from the Holy Spirit to help bring Him into the center of our marriages.

Karen · August 9, 2020 at 6:50 pm
